1. Freddie’s free-floating anger is always a joy.

2. To paraphrase a smart man, much CT commentary takes the form of looking for a fight and then acting surprised when you get one.

3. adam.smith is basically right—this paper wouldn’t have gotten published in a good social science journal, for the reasons he and Eszter give. Now, it’s also true that a lot of shitty research gets published. But the ever so slightly more subtle points are (a) that less of that shit than you might think makes its way into very good journals, and (b) is a very high prestige magazine that occupies an odd position as a kind of supercharged , and we should really expect better of it. Social science is underrepresented as a rule in and it’s a pity that the stuff that makes it in is often a bit flashy and undercooked.

Oh, great, a back-and-forth , and his complaints, rather than anything to do with the various actual subjects under discussion. .

I know Ioannidis’s work and I think it’s great, but I always took his main point to be that even if we do follow pretty standard textbook science, we get a lot of false results and we should be careful about that. But if you add statistical malpractice to his model, things become even worse, so surely Ioannidis would agree that we should be very careful about that, as indeed he says:

I’m also aware of various cases of fraud across disciplines as well as of studies showing clustering of published results around commonly used p-value thresholds, suggesting at a minimum cherry-picking of results. And, while we’re at disciplines, mine is JK Womens shoes sandals 3 Blue Light Blue vI2yDo1G
(pdf, key figures p. 30/31) of that.

But to me that just means we need to do better by doing the things that people like Ioannidis have been advocating for a long time (register studies, promote reward meta-analyses and replication, reward publish negative findings, etc.). I don’t see why it should mean that we should give individual studies, published in highly-coveted places, a pass for elementary errors. I’m not sure why my position is “well-studied naive cynicism” (though I like the term)–wouldn’t that better describe what you’re proposing?

However, large studies may still have biases and these should be acknowledged and avoided.

Yeah, it’s crazy how, when I make an anodyne point that began “I don’t disagree,” but which might, if you squint the right way, amount to something like dissent, and this blog’s amoeba of comity fetishists lay into me with straight credentialism and big-timing, I might say, “hey, that’s lame.” I must be some kind of kook!

It would be nice for everybody to come back to topic.

This article introduces a set of special views we use troughout the UI. All based on backbonejs.org/#View .

This one is all about garbage collection and avoiding memory leaks. It's main feature is the ability to detect that it got removed from the DOM. In that case, the view cleans up itself, i.e. removes all event handlers and nulls all properties automatically.

All your custom views should be based on DisposableView! And please please please favor Backbone's listenTo(...) over .on(...) (see TAOFFEN Womens Spring Platform Shoes Beige oLiSGtxsQ
)! The first one will be subject to garbage collection, the latter one won't.

favor Backbone's listenTo(...) over .on(...)

See io.ox/backbone/views/disposable.js

A very simple view based on DisposableView, of course. Its central option is point (string) which defines or refers to an extension point. For convenience, you can call .extend({ ... }) to define extensions on the fly.

Purpose is to simplify and promote the use of extensions.

See io.ox/backbone/views/extensible.js

Methods

extend(options)

Add extensions. This method expects a simple key-value object; key becomes the extension id, the value becomes the "render" function; the extensions index is auto-incremented by 100. This function is only executed once per point before render() to avoid duplicates (extensions are static, i.e. not bound to any view instance).

A modal dialog based on ExtensibleView that uses the markup and CSS of Bootstrap's Modal Dialog (see ).

See io.ox/backbone/views/modal.js

call busy() instead of close() when invoking an action (except "cancel"). This allows to do asynchronous stuff after an action has been invoked.

container

parent DOM element of the dialog; default is 'body'

this action is triggered on <enter> by default

set initial focus on this element

link to online help article

keyboard

close popup on <escape> ; default is true

maximize

popup uses full height

extension point id to render content; not mandatory but you should use it

dialog title

dialog width

open()

Calls render(), adds to DOM (i.e. container, see options), shows modal dialog.

close()

Closes dialog, remove it from DOM, dialog gets disposed.

busy()

Disables all form elements, adds opacity.

idle() Enables all form elements - except those that were already disabled when calling .busy(). Removes opacity.

idle()

See ExtensibleView

build(callback)

Run a simple builder as a callback.
